The Brands That Inspired M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports: From the 80s to Today

Before M.U.S.T. Fit®, There Were the Brands We Grew Up With

Every clothing brand starts somewhere.

For M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports, part of that story goes back long before we had a name, a logo or our own collection.

Growing up in Britain, sportswear wasn't simply something you wore to play sport. It became part of who you were. Your trainers mattered. Your jacket mattered. Your tracksuit mattered. And sometimes, the badge on your chest said almost as much as the clothes themselves.

Like millions of people, I have always admired the giants of sportswear: Nike, adidas and PUMA. These brands helped take sports clothing from the pitch and running track into everyday life.

But some of my strongest memories come from another group of names.

Sergio Tacchini. FILA. HEAD. Le Coq Sportif. Reebok. Diadora. Hi-Tec. Kangol. Kappa.

For anyone who remembers British fashion in the 1980s and 1990s, some of those names immediately take you back.

When Sportswear Became Streetwear

The 1990s were an incredible period for sportswear.

Football culture, music and street fashion increasingly crossed over. A tracksuit top didn't require a tennis racket. Trainers didn't require a running track. Sportswear had become everyday fashion.

Sergio Tacchini and FILA had that unmistakable European sportswear look. Diadora combined football heritage with street appeal. Le Coq Sportif had its distinctive French identity, while HEAD was another sporting name that became familiar far beyond the court.

Then there was Reebok, which became absolutely enormous.

And at the more affordable end of the market was Hi-Tec.

I still remember Hi-Tec because they were among my first branded trainers. They may not have carried the price tag of some of the premium names, but owning a recognisable pair of branded trainers meant something.

That's an important lesson I've never forgotten:

A great sportswear brand shouldn't only be for people who can afford the most expensive label.

The Bucket Hat That Became an Icon

And then there was Kangol.

For my generation, the Kangol bucket hat became one of those instantly recognisable pieces of fashion.

It crossed sport, music and street culture and became something you seemed to see everywhere.

That idea still fascinates me today.

A relatively simple product — a hat — can become part of a generation's identity when the design, culture and timing come together.

That's one reason caps and bucket hats remain important to M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports today.

Sometimes the simplest pieces become the ones people remember.

Kappa: Still One of My Favourites

Of all those classic brands, Kappa remains one of my personal favourites today.

My memories of Kappa go back to when I was a teenager. At that time, from my own experience, Kappa felt like one of the more expensive sportswear brands to own. Seeing that famous Omini logo on a tracksuit or top meant something, particularly as Kappa became so closely associated with football and European sportswear culture.

What's interesting for me today is how different my experience of buying Kappa has become.

I can now find Kappa clothing at prices that are a fraction of what I remember having to pay — or wanting to pay — when I was younger. That isn't a statement about Kappa's business strategy or where the company positions itself today. It's simply my experience as someone who admired the brand as a teenager and still likes it decades later.

And perhaps that's the most impressive thing.

The price I personally pay for Kappa may have changed, the fashions have certainly changed, and the way we buy sportswear has completely changed — but I still recognise that logo immediately and I still want to wear the brand.

That has taught me something important while developing M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports:

A strong brand isn't only about what somebody pays for it today. It's about whether they still remember it, recognise it and want to wear it years later.

If M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports can create even a little of that connection with the people who discover our brand today, then we will be building something worth keeping.

What Nike, adidas and PUMA Taught the World

Then, of course, there are the giants.

Nike, adidas and PUMA demonstrate what happens when performance, design, athletes, football, music, culture and marketing all come together.

They didn't simply sell sports clothing.

They built identities.

People began wearing sportswear when they weren't actually doing sport.

That transition helped create the enormous sportswear and streetwear culture we have today.

And that's something that has influenced my thinking behind M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports.

From Their Generation to Ours

M.U.S.T. Fit® isn't trying to become another Nike, adidas, FILA or Kappa.

Those brands have their own incredible histories.

We are building ours.

But I believe you should always remember the brands, people and ideas that inspired you.

For M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports, the fundamentals remain intentionally simple:

Tees. Hoodies. Caps. Bucket hats. Windbreakers.

Products that can move between sport, travel, the gym and everyday streetwear.

The same basic principle that made me fall in love with sportswear decades ago still applies:

You don't necessarily need to be playing sport to wear sportswear.

It becomes part of your identity.

Wear What Moves You

Looking back at brands such as Sergio Tacchini, FILA, Reebok, Kappa, Diadora, Kangol, Hi-Tec, HEAD and Le Coq Sportif, alongside global giants such as Nike, adidas and PUMA, reminds me just how much sportswear has changed.

But it also reminds me how much has stayed the same.

We still want clothes that make us feel good.

We still associate certain pieces with particular periods of our lives.

And we still use what we wear to say something about ourselves.

Those memories have helped shape the thought process behind M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports.

We are still at the beginning of our story.

But every great brand had a beginning.
