When Sportswear Meant Something — The Feeling We Never Forgot
There was something different about buying sportswear when we were younger.
Maybe it was because we had less choice. Maybe it was because money was tighter. Or perhaps it was simply because when you wanted something, you often had to wait for it.
You saved.
You worked.
You waited.
And when you finally got it, you felt like you were on top of the world.
It Was Never Just About the Brand
I've been reminded of this recently after hearing other people's memories of the sportswear they grew up wanting.
Different people remembered different brands. Different trainers, tracksuits, jackets and football shirts. But what really caught my attention wasn't what they bought.
It was how they described the way it made them feel.
One lady told me that when she finally bought the item she'd been saving for, she "felt like a queen."
Others talked about the pride they felt after saving money from their first job or putting aside wages from a part-time job until they could finally afford what they'd had their eye on.
Those comments immediately took me back to my own younger years.
Growing up, branded sportswear wasn't something that simply appeared in the wardrobe. If you came from a family where money had to be watched, getting something from one of the big brands could be a major event.
And when you eventually earned enough to buy something yourself?
That was different again.
The First Time You Bought It Yourself
I think this is an experience that crosses generations, countries and cultures.
There's a particular feeling when you're young and you earn some money for yourself.
Suddenly, something you've been looking at through a shop window — or seeing somebody else wearing — becomes possible.
You count what you've saved.
You know how much more you need.
You might work another weekend or wait for another payday.
Then eventually, you walk into that shop knowing you've earned enough to buy it yourself.
The bag you carry out feels considerably more valuable than the clothes inside it.
Because you're not just carrying a new jacket, shirt or pair of trainers.
You're carrying something you achieved.
From Wanting to Earning
That's why so many of the sportswear brands we grew up with became emotionally important to us.
Of course we loved the designs.
We wanted the three stripes. We noticed the logos. We knew what our friends were wearing. We knew what the footballers, musicians and people we looked up to were wearing.
But underneath all of that was something much more personal.
Aspiration.
For some people, those first trainers or that first expensive tracksuit might have been one of the earliest things they ever seriously saved for.
Long before mortgages, cars, holidays and all the responsibilities that arrive later in life, there was that first thing you desperately wanted.
And you found a way to get it.
Why Do We Still Remember It?
Decades later, many of us can still remember those purchases.
That's quite remarkable when you think about it.
We probably can't remember hundreds of other things we bought during those years, yet somebody mentions a particular pair of trainers or a famous sportswear brand and suddenly we're transported straight back.
We remember the shop.
We remember our friends.
Sometimes we even remember approximately how much it cost.
Most importantly, we remember how we felt wearing it for the first time. Emotions!
That's the part that interests me most today.
Emotions Matters
Sportswear has changed enormously.
Today we have more brands, more choice and instant access to products from virtually anywhere in the world.
Fashion moves faster.
Trends come and go through TikTok, Instagram and other platforms at incredible speed.
But I'm not convinced the basic human emotion has changed very much at all.
Somewhere today, there's a young person saving money from their first job.
Someone else is waiting for payday.
Someone has spotted a pair of trainers, a hoodie, a football shirt or a jacket they really want.
And when they finally buy it with their own money, I suspect they'll experience exactly the same feeling many of us did decades ago.
Pride.
Confidence.
Independence.
Maybe they'll even feel like a king or queen for the day.
What Those Memories Taught Me
Looking back, I think those years shaped my view of sportswear far more than I realised at the time.
The brands we wanted, saved for, talked about and eventually managed to own weren't simply clothes.
They represented belonging, confidence, achievement and sometimes a little bit of status.
That feeling has stayed with me.
And it's one of the influences behind M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports.
I didn't create M.U.S.T. Fit® simply because I wanted to have another clothing or sportswear company.
I wanted the brand to stand for a feeling.
That moment when you put something on, look in the mirror and think:
I look good in this.
And when you look good, something else often happens.
You feel fantastic.
That's why, for me, M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports isn't only about what we make or what we sell. It's about how what you wear can make you feel — whether you're training, watching football, meeting friends, travelling or simply getting on with your day.
And perhaps that's something the great sportswear brands of our youth taught us without us even realising it.
They gave us something to aspire to.
Something to save for.
Something to be proud of.
And, occasionally, something that made us feel on top of the world.
Styles change. Generations change. The names on the labels change.
But wanting to put something on and feel good wearing it never really does.
That's one of the ideas behind M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports —
Wear What Moves You.
Look Good. Feel Fantastic.
