The Future of British Sportswear:

Can Independent Brands Challenge the Giants?

From the British high street to Roger Federer and On, a new generation of sportswear brands is challenging the traditional fashion landscape. But what does it take to become the next name people want to wear?

Walk down almost any British high street and you'll see familiar names: Nike, Adidas, Zara, H&M, The North Face, Under Armour and other established fashion and sportswear retailers.

For decades, these brands have helped shape what we wear, how we exercise and how we express ourselves.

But the fashion industry is changing.

New names are emerging. Athletes are becoming business partners and brand owners. Celebrities are influencing what people wear far beyond the sports field or red carpet.

And some independent brands are demonstrating that the giants don't have the market entirely to themselves.

Could the next major sportswear brand be one we've barely heard of today?

From Sportswear to Everyday Fashion

One of the biggest changes in modern fashion is the way sportswear has become everyday clothing.

Hoodies, joggers, trainers and relaxed athletic silhouettes are no longer reserved for sport.

They're worn to work, to university, when travelling, meeting friends and enjoying everyday life.

Consumers increasingly look for clothing that combines comfort, design, quality and versatility.

For independent sportswear brands, that creates an opportunity.

Rather than competing with the largest companies across every product category, emerging labels can develop their own identity and connect with particular lifestyles and communities.

On: How a Swiss Running Brand Became a Global Name

One of the most interesting examples is On, the Swiss sportswear company widely recognised for its distinctive CloudTec running shoes.

Founded in Switzerland in 2010, On began with a focus on creating a different running experience.

Its early identity centred on performance, engineering and innovative footwear rather than celebrity fashion.

Over time, its distinctive shoe designs and premium positioning helped the company attract a growing audience.

Then came a partnership that brought the brand to an entirely different level of public attention.

Roger Federer and the Power of a Famous Face

In 2019, tennis legend Roger Federer joined On as a co-owner.

This was more than the familiar arrangement of paying an athlete to appear in an advertising campaign.

Federer became involved in the business and product development, helping On expand its identity beyond running into tennis-inspired footwear and lifestyle fashion.

The relationship was particularly powerful because it connected a Swiss sporting icon with a Swiss performance brand.

Federer brought recognition, credibility and an audience that extended far beyond existing On customers.

On brought an established product proposition, engineering expertise and a distinctive identity.

By 2025, the company had exceeded CHF 3 billion in annual sales, with growth across its retail, wholesale and direct-to-consumer operations.

Its expansion illustrates what can happen when product development, brand positioning, distribution and influential partnerships work together.

But there is an important lesson: Federer did not create On's product identity from nothing. He joined a brand that had already established what made it different.

Castore: A British Success Story With Andy Murray

Closer to home, Castore provides another compelling example.

Founded by brothers Tom and Phil Beahon on Merseyside, Castore entered a sportswear industry already dominated by major international companies.

Its founders focused on premium performance clothing and sought to build a distinctive alternative.

In 2019, Castore announced a major partnership with British tennis champion Andy Murray.

Murray's involvement extended beyond simply wearing the clothing. The partnership incorporated product development and wider business collaboration.

For an emerging British sportswear business, the association with one of the country's most recognised athletes brought visibility and sporting credibility.

Castore subsequently expanded its presence through professional teams, partnerships and retail distribution.

Its development also illustrates the challenges of scaling a sportswear company: attracting attention is one achievement; maintaining quality, operational standards and commercial performance is another.

Even so, the story demonstrates that independent British brands can enter markets traditionally dominated by much larger competitors.

When Athletes Become Brands Themselves

Another major shift is the growing interest among athletes in building businesses around their own identities.

Michael Jordan's relationship with Nike helped create one of the world's most recognisable sportswear franchises. Jordan Brand became a dedicated Nike division in 1997 and developed an influence that extends well beyond basketball.

Serena Williams has also explored the connection between sport, fashion and entrepreneurship, launching her own fashion collection in 2018.

These businesses follow different ownership models, but they demonstrate the commercial influence that athletes can bring to clothing.

Some become brand founders. Others take ownership stakes or collaborate on designs. Many continue with traditional sponsorship agreements.

The important difference is authenticity.

A recognisable personality can attract attention, but a strong connection between that individual and the product gives the partnership greater meaning.

And celebrity influence isn't limited to sports stars. Fashion and lifestyle personalities are increasingly involved in partnerships that blur the boundaries between performance clothing and everyday fashion.

Can One Famous Person Transform an Independent Brand?

Imagine a rising footballer, professional boxer, musician or influential creator wearing a hoodie from a small independent sportswear label.

A photograph appears online.

Their followers become curious.

Some search for the brand. Others visit the website, share the image or follow the account.

Suddenly, a company previously unknown to those people has entered the conversation.

That is the opportunity celebrity and athlete exposure can create.

But awareness alone does not guarantee success.

The product must still meet expectations. Customers need confidence in quality, price, delivery and service.

If those foundations are in place, the right partnership can help introduce a brand to audiences it might otherwise struggle to reach.

For a smaller company, the most valuable first partnership may not be with a globally famous athlete.

It could be a promising young sports star, a respected local athlete or a creator whose audience genuinely connects with the clothing.

Recognition matters. Relevance matters more.

A New Opportunity for the British High Street

The future of British sportswear is unlikely to belong exclusively to one type of company.

Established names will continue to shape the market through their scale, distribution and investment.

But independent brands have opportunities to develop their own communities, styles and identities.

The success of emerging companies does not mean launching a sportswear business is easy.

Far from it.

Customers have more choices than ever, and earning their attention requires consistency, credible products and persistent brand building.

Yet the stories of On and Castore show that the landscape can change.

Every established name was once an unfamiliar one.

And somewhere, another independent brand is beginning its own journey.

Where Does M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports Fit Into This Changing World?

At M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports, we are building an independent British clothing brand inspired by movement, personal expression and everyday life.

Our approach brings together:

SPORT × STREET × LIFESTYLE

We believe clothing should offer more than a familiar logo.

It should feel right, suit the moment and reflect the person wearing it.

From heavyweight hoodies to everyday essentials, we're developing a collection for people who value comfort, individuality and versatile style.

Our 560 GSM heavyweight hoodies represent one part of that vision, bringing substantial fabric weight and a structured feel to everyday clothing.

We don't claim to be the next Nike, Adidas, On or Castore.

Those companies have their own stories.

We're creating ours.

And perhaps that is the most exciting part of today's changing sportswear industry: the next independent label to capture someone's imagination could come from almost anywhere.

It doesn't necessarily need to begin with a famous face.

It begins with an idea, a product and a reason for people to believe in it.

Then comes the challenge of getting the world to notice.

Could the Next Sportswear Name Be One You Haven't Discovered Yet?

Fashion never stands still.

The brands that dominate today's high street will continue to evolve, while independent businesses work to earn their place alongside them.

Athletes, creators and everyday customers will all influence which names gain recognition in the years ahead.

At M.U.S.T. Fit® Sports, we know we're at the beginning of that journey.

But every journey begins somewhere.
